Thinking about changing accountants?
You do not need to make a rushed decision or wait until tax time. Start by getting clear on what is working, what is not, and what would need to move if you changed firms.
Talk Through the ChangeWhat changing accountants should look like
A good handover starts with clarity. Before anything is transferred, you should understand the work already in progress, upcoming deadlines, the records available and the scope you want from the new relationship.
Clarify where things stand
We start with your current structure, lodgement position, accounting software and the issues that prompted you to consider a change.
Agree the scope
Before work begins, the responsibilities, information required and service scope should be clear.
Authorised handover
Once you have engaged Carmody and the relevant authority is in place, records and information can be coordinated with your previous adviser as appropriate.
Set the new rhythm
The next step is getting records, deadlines and communication into a workable routine so you know what happens next.
You may not need a new accountant. You may need a different level of service.
You only hear from your accountant around lodgement time.
You do not have a clear view of upcoming tax or BAS obligations.
Your bookkeeping and accounting are disconnected or repeatedly need catch-up work.
The business has changed but the accounting relationship has not.
You are unsure who is responsible for what or what your current service includes.
Changing accountants — common questions
Do I have to wait until the end of the financial year to change accountants?
No. A change can happen during the year. The practical timing depends on current lodgements, deadlines, work already in progress and the records that need to be transferred.
What should I bring to the first conversation?
Useful starting information includes recent tax returns or financial statements, BAS history, current accounting software, recent ATO correspondence and a summary of any deadlines or unresolved issues. Do not send passwords or sensitive account credentials through a website form.
Will Carmody contact my previous accountant?
If you decide to proceed and the appropriate authority is in place, Carmody can coordinate the professional handover and request the records needed for the agreed work.
What if my books or lodgements are behind?
That does not prevent an initial conversation. The first step is establishing what is outstanding, what records exist and which deadlines or risks need attention first.
